With the help of my incredible teacher, I have brought my writing to a new level." Descriptive essays are common in elementary school and are usually used as warm-up journal prompts at the beginning of a language arts lesson. These kinds of essays are also very common in creative writing classes as they are used to build your descriptive skills. If you’re looking for some descriptive essay topics, you might want to try this list of descriptive essay topics . This is the most common essay written while in elementary school. It is usually considered the five-paragraph essay – one introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a single conclusion paragraph. However, as you enter later grades and college, you will come to realize that expository essays sometimes run a little longer than that. This format is usually just a way to begin introducing the idea of expository essays to students. An expository essay is a specific kind of essay that involves investigating an idea, evaluating the evidence, presenting the idea, and supporting the presentation with an argument. Expository essays are usually written through comparison and contrast, definition, example, and the analysis of cause and effect. There is a specific structure that expository essays follow. There are 2 kinds of descriptive essays. The first type deals with persons and the second one is about objects. When you describe a person, you should add the physical features and details that appeals readers emotionally and physically. The other type is describing physical objects. This type of writing should be physically appealing to the reader rather than emotionally. The writer has the freedom to use metaphors, while writing this kind of writing. When you choose the details for your writing, list down specific pieces of information or facts that you want to include in the writing. It is impossible to add every facet of the topic into your writing. It's a great creative exercise to sit down and simply describe what you observe. However, when writing a descriptive essay, you often have a particular reason for writing your description. Getting in touch with this reason can help you focus your description and imbue your language with a particular perspective or emotion. What do you want to describe? More than many other types of essays, descriptive essays strive to create a deeply involved and vivid experience for the reader. Great descriptive essays achieve this affect not through facts and statistics but by using detailed observations and descriptions. Consider these two simple examples: Quick Tips for Writing Your Descriptive Essay If a student or a teacher wanted a definition, I’d say : I’ve tried to tease out the ways personal essays, descriptive essays and short stories are related yet distinct in the past, with some limited success. Truth is, the ties that bind them are stronger than any scissors which seeks to cut them apart but with so many marks going for “clarity of purpose ” [this includes responding to the topic as well as writing within the specified genre] it’s not surprising that both teachers and students seek clarity on what exactly defines each genre. When it came up as an option on Leaving Cert paper 1 recently, the marking scheme stated that students could adopt a “narrative or discursive approach “. Confusion often arises here because when we think “narrative ” we think story – plot, characters, setting. And when we think “discursive ” we think argument, opinion… Have a look at this example which is extremely descriptive (it uses metaphor throughout) but which is also discussing an issue – bullying: http://leavingcertenglish.net/2014/03/abcs-of-bullying/ It begins with a poem [hence, aesthetic use of language] In mine I linked my ending to the intro. Think it worked quite well. I think that's fine because they'll know what it means. I'd finish your statement with one final paragraph on what you might use your degree to do. My general structure kinda goes Many personal statements end up looking less like a record of your brilliance and more like a written application to work as a human thesaurus. Admissions tutors are looking for substance, and pomposity won’t do anything to convince them you love their subject. The advice from both men? “Always have someone proof read it.” Make everything count “Confidence is great, veering into egotism is not,” says Alan Carlile. Universities are looking for someone interested in the course and someone interesting to teach it to. Cut the small talk and press home why what you’re saying is relevant. First things first: personal statements aren’t just for your CV. To help you find the right one for you, here are some real personal statement examples – and how you can use them to make your CV stand out: And remember: you should always aim to edit your personal statement for each role you apply for. That way, you can ensure you’re really selling yourself to their role, rather than simply sending the same generic statement for each application. As an experienced sales manager, my tenacious and proactive approach resulted in numerous important contract wins. My excellent networking skills have provided my team with vital client leads, and my ability to develop client relationships has resulted in an 18% increase in business renewals for my current organisation. After eight years in sales, currently seeking a new challenge which will utilise my meticulous attention to detail, and friendly, professional manner. Start by answering the following three questions: Why do you want to work in this industry? What skills make you right for the role (hint: use the job description)? And where do you want to go in your career? Dealing with redundancy is never easy. But when dealt with in the right way, it needn’t be a hindrance when making applications. There are many good reasons someone may need to take a career break. However, school leavers should always focus on the latter – and what you can bring to the business, as well as focusing on the knowledge and skills gained through education, rather than employment history. Soft skills are also a great place to start. by Michael Cheary Put the main focus on your employment history, and provide further information for your break in your cover letter. You don’t even necessarily need to mention it again, if you’ve already explained it elsewhere. As stated above, your personal statement should include a brief overview of who you are, your strengths and any work experience and/or education you’ve had. Also include skills you’ve gained, such as time management, customer service, teamwork, computer skills etc. Your personal statement should end with your objective. It’s a chance to wrap up your statement with an explanation of why you want the role and why you’re best suited to it. • A skilled and adaptable construction worker who specialises in bricklaying as well as roofing, plastering, plumbing, timber work and demolition. • Captain of school hockey team (shows leadership) • Why does this role interest you? 5. Am I applying for the right course? Medical school application essay length - the Medical School Personal Statement, Kaplan Test Prep5/17/2017 So, now you know the main tricks on how to write a personal statement for medical school admissions. Good luck! It’s easy to get stuck after you complete your first med school personal statement draft because you might not be confident that your approach to the personal statement for medical school is good because you don’t have a successful model to follow. You absolutely must have example essays, like our medical school personal statements. Your AMCAS personal statement is the single most important piece of your med school application because it is your opportunity to consciously control how you are perceived by the med school admissions committee. Step 1. Map out the entire structure of your paper to ensure that your med school personal statement follows a clear theme. Every anecdote you include or reflection you make should clearly fit into your strategic framework and remind your reader what your motivations are. Many medical school applicants rely on tired techniques in their admission essay, like chronological storytelling: “I was born, I went to school and got good grades, now I want to be a doctor” (SNOOZE) and they write their essay with no structure, theme or imagination.
Here’s the tough part: The prompt for the medical school application essay — aka the AMCAS personal statement — (which says, in part, “Use this section to compose a personal essay explaining hwy you selected the field of medicine, what motivates you to learn more about medicine…”) is so open-ended that the vast majority of pre-med students have no idea how to approach the medical school personal statement with a strategy that will create persuasive results. 3. DO broaden your list of potential essay themes. Believe it or not, this is your moment to be creative! This is not only the time to think outside the box, it's also the time to review certain aspects of your life, including your experiences (school or non-school related), motivations, and personal qualities. Why is the personal statement so challenging? 5. DO give yourself enough time. Because so many components are involved in composing a strong personal statement, it's important to start at least the first step—brainstorming—early on. Each year, a substantial number of applicants express some regret that they felt rushed to submit early and lost critical time in working on their statement; when they realize how much time it involves, it's often too late. 1. DO make sure your statement addresses these two important points: your reason(s) for wanting to pursue medicine and your appeal as a candidate to medical schools. It is important to cover both these points; often, many statements only answer one of them (usually the first one). These types of statements risk getting lost in the shuffle with inundated admissions committees searching for those whose unique qualities shine through their application materials. Let’s clear this up right away: Your diversity essay does not have to be about your or others’ ethnocultural or socioeconomic backgrounds. Moving past this notion will expand your thinking and options for choosing a compelling topic many fold. In other words, cultural competency refers to: I hear this most often from students of various Asian backgrounds who feel their demographic is so well represented in medicine that they cannot make a case for their uniqueness as a medical school applicant. Regardless of the topic you choose, as with all essays, make sure to link it back to your identity and experience by answering these questions: Before we get into misconceptions about the diversity essay, I want to clarify the meaning of cultural competency by first offering the NIH’s definition: Deliver[ing] services that are respectful of and responsive to the health beliefs, practices and cultural and linguistic needs of diverse patients." As part of our mission, we ensure our student resources are always provided for free or at cost. In addition to our free forums and data-driven resources, we also archive excellent online services, blogs, and publish multiple books for our community. A: Every piece of your application “matters” and which piece matters most often depends on the outlook and personal preference of the person reading your application. That said, most screeners read applications in a preferred order and rarely review the secondary essay before the primary application. Therefore, if your primary application, transcripts, and letters of reference either individually or together convince a reviewer that you should be invited for an interview, the secondary essay may not be that important. But, on the other hand, if your primary application is poorly written or does not convince the reader that he or she wants to meet you, then he may read the secondary essay with a more critical eye, looking for more evidence that you are worthy of an interview. A: Receiving requests for secondary essays is not typically indicative of much. In fact, very few medical schools “screen applications” to decide who will receive a secondary essay request and most medical schools send all applicants secondary applications. So, no, for the vast majority of medical schools, receiving a secondary application should not be interpreted as a “good sign.” A: Of course! The only caveat to this is if the medical school specifically states that no material that is already covered in your primary application be repeated in a secondary essay. In fact, I find that when applicants compose comprehensive primary applications, they are often forced to repeat some of this content in secondary essays. Since medical schools often create secondary essay prompts to address deficiencies they observe in applications, having already covered the material implies your application wasn’t deficient. “Why our medical school?” prompts should be written individually for each medical school and must never be recycled. Every year, medical school admissions officers read essays that state a student really, really, really wants to attend a medical school other than their own because the applicant hastily copied and pasted a secondary essay response written for another medical school. Q: If I get a lot of secondary requests, that means I am in great shape, right? It means I have been screened in! The question posed—or the essay prompt—will be surprisingly vague. The Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) prompt from the AMCAS application is simply: “Use the space provided to explain why you want to go to medical school.” It may seem simple on the surface, but this can be one of the most challenging questions that premed students encounter on the medical school application or the MCAT. Yet, it’s the basic question posed in at least one major part of your application: the medical school personal statement. Perhaps you’re a musicology major who’s also passionate about education and patient care. Focusing on the intersection between the arts and sciences both historically and in your own life could be a good launching-off point. Take it from us—it’s worked before. Unlike the school-specific, tailored information you’ll give on your secondary applications, your AMCAS medical school statement will remain uniform across all the schools you apply to. You’ll need to give some serious thought to why you want to go into medicine. and more specifically, why you want an MD or a DO. Far too often, students write generic, impassioned passages about “wanting to help people.” While that is a completely valid reason to go to medical school, it doesn’t really explain why you want to become a doctor to the exclusion of other health careers, like nursing or physical therapy. It doesn’t really even explain why you want to go into medicine. Firefighters, teachers, plumbers, and landscapers help people too! Let’s start today with a seemingly simple question that you are going to have to consider before applying to med school: Who are you? Since you’ll only have one version of the personal essay, it should not be directed towards any individual school. Use your secondary applications and essays to express your interests in individual medical schools. Bibliography. Creative writing. Essay 527 Words | 2 Pages Canada Reads. Indira Gandhi. While same-sex couples certainly cannot reproduce themselves, artificial insemination for lesbians would be an option. Or it might be argued that the government should subsidize gay marriages to make it easier to adopt. Despite neither arguments of these being good enough reasons to justify legalizing any of the types of banned marriages discussed earlier, it bears discussing. Regarding families where the father is absent, research by University of Canterbury professor Bruce J. Ellis has shown that, “greater exposure to father absence was strongly associated with elevated risk for early sexual activity and adolescent pregnancy.” This is relevant to the debate around same-sex marriage because, in lesbian couples, any daughter would certainly be growing up apart from their biological father, thus increasing the risk of these unfortunate effects. Opposition to gay marriage has such a negative connotation because advocates have successfully framed the issue as one of equal rights. By this logic, if you oppose gay marriage, you are opposed to equal rights for everyone. They claim that the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees them the right to marry whomever they desire, including members of the same sex. To forbid this would, in their minds, be discrimination. But do all people have the right to marry whomever they want already, with the exception of same-sex couples? No; states have laws regulating marriage, forbidding first cousins from marrying, brothers and sisters from marrying, parents and offspring from marrying, and people from marrying animals, inanimate objects, or multiple other individuals. 1537 words 1364 words Gay Marriage Should Be Legal Essay - As many minority groups in the United States have fought for their civil rights in past decades, it is the gay community that now finds itself striving for equal opportunities in our culturally diverse nation. Although they have already come a long way in the path of acceptance, most recently the gay community has had to confront extremist conservative groups who claim that allowing same-sex couples to join in a civilly recognized union violates the act of a traditional, sacred marriage. Gay and lesbian individuals feel that, like any other group, they should not be denied rights that are typically bestowed upon heterosexual couples who are recognized by the federal government. [tags: Same-Sex Marriage Essays] Essay on Gay Marriage Should be Legal - On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry. Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy stated in the majority opinion: "The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry. No longer may this liberty be denied to them." Many conservatives are completely against gay marriage and they have stated that they will fight to have the Supreme Court ruling overturned. People against gay marriages say that it is not natural to be a homosexual. [tags: Same-Sex Marriage Essays] 1054 words 605 words So, with an increasing number of same-sex couples, same sex marriage should be legal. Marriage is about love and supporting one another. Some people feel comfortable being with the same sex. So why should their freedoms be limited? At one time, the church and religion defined civilization. Their laws reflected what was seen as natural in creation. Now, however, we live in a post-Christian society in which natural law has been largely replaced by other civic values. In 2004, for example, Massachusetts began granting same-sex marriage licenses, and the trend is moving forward. Some people think gay marriage is unnatural. While most religions consider homosexuality a sin, that does not mean states cannot legalize gay marriage or at least recognize it. The state is not here to dictate religious ideas but to support the rights of all citizens. Curtis Crabtree is a senior at Comstock High School. By Sophie Gamez By Jazmine Houston Everybody, gay or not, should be treated equally. Although many argue our nation was founded on god-fearing values, clearly civic values like equality and freedom from religious persecution were more central to America's founding. Our Founding Fathers were deistic Christians, open to many ideas outside of orthodox Christianity. Between 2000 and 2005, the number of same-sex couples in the United States increased by more than 20 percent, according to the Williams Institute, a think tank concerned with laws and public policy related to sexual orientation. Argumentative essay domestic violence - selection Of Domestic Violence Argumentative Essay Topic5/17/2017 We can learn about abusive behavior patterns and develop strategies for helping people deal with it. But, does these antics actually work and to what extent? We know abuse can occur at any time and it can happen to anyone, but where does the line cross when it is considered wrong? Some people deal with forms of abuse and do so for so long they do not care anymore. There are agencies that help people deal with abuse but what happens when a person decides to go back to that unhealthy environment? Do such organizations that provide support and assistance offer enough to help people understand this behavior is not right in society? It is unfair for people outside of the relationship to waste their time judging abused women. Instead, it is time to work together to empower women and make them feel safe to seek for help when experiencing an abusive relationship. In order to help detect domestic violence it is important increase screening for domestic violence in health-care settings. Five professors and researchers from the University of California at Los Angeles conducted a survey to find an estimate of rates of domestic violence screening among women from a broad demographic. The results and analysis of the survey were presented in the article, “Screening for Domestic Violence Among Adult Women in the United States ”, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine on May 2007. This article explained the low rates of screening for domestic violence among women and discussed the importance of screening for domestic abuse in health care settings. The study reinforced the importance of developing training and raising awareness of domestic violence in primary care and mental specialty settings. It also provided the first nationally representative data on domestic violence screening in health care settings. “Domestic abuse is as common as breast cancer and more common than thyroid problems therefore it should also be treated as an important issue among physicians” ( Klap et al. 579). Since domestic violence is such a common epidemic it is important for physicians to treat like one. Women feel safe when asked about domestic violence in an environment in which they know there will people to help them out. Women who report any type of domestic abuse should utilize the services that are offered in their community. “Every woman has the right to personal safety and a happy, healthy relationship” (Wilson 193). No woman should believe they deserve to be treated less than what they are worth by a partner or any other person. No child should have to see their mother with bruises or in pain. No excuse validates a punch, kick, slap, or burn against a woman. No words are powerful enough to make a woman lose her self-esteem and soul. Domestic abuse, physical or emotional, is an epidemic problem that affects a great number of the female population in the United States. It can no longer be overlooked or ignored. In order to prevent or reduce domestic violence against women it is important to increase the education provided to women on the types of domestic abuse that exist and ways in which they can receive help. This can be done by encouraging screening in health-care settings and having groups advocate for these changes in society. Henning, Kris R. and Lisa M. Klesges. "Utilization Of Counseling And Supportive Services By Female Victims Of Domestic Abuse." Violence & Victims 17.5 (2002): 623-636. OmniFile Full Text Select (H.W. Wilson). Web. 7 May 2012. A public education effort is also needed to break the silence among members in society. It is important to reduce social tolerance, and to increase the level of social responsibility by promoting individual and collective action regarding domestic violence against women. It was reported that from the 25% of the population that is effected by domestic violence about 2.5%-10% actually reported domestic violence that leave to about 15% of cases that go unreported each year (Gracia 536). As previously mentioned there are personal and societal reasons on why women do not report domestic abuse, but in most cases is due to the lack of education provided on this subject. Zero tolerance campaigns, involving local organizations, community groups, academics, and a highly visible media campaign with the aim of challenging social attitudes towards violence against women by their intimate partners are a good example of a public education effort to change the social climate of silence, and tolerance. It is believed that women who are in love are willing to do whatever it takes to maintain a relationship with their partner. Love is the foundation for every relationship and helps couples overcome any obstacle they face along the road. Unfortunately, after a while, this love that once existed goes away and is replaced by bruises and hurtful words. A relationship that was once a fairytale story is affected by an epidemic that is known to affect one out of every four women in the Unites States, domestic abuse. Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of abusive behavior that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over the other partner (Gellert 168). Once domestic abuse affects a relationship it is hard for the women to recognize the abuse because of the dominance and love they have for their partner. Violence against women is one of the most prevalent problems in America that affects women from all age, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic class therefore it is important for women to receive the treatment necessary to reduce and prevent further abuse. To do this, there must be an increase in the education provided to women on the types of domestic abuse that exists and also on all the help that they can seek to better their life. Screening for domestic violence in health-care settings and support groups that can advocate for these changes are two ways in which this national epidemic can be reduced. Economic dependency is another reason women hesitate to leave their abusive partner. In most cases, once a woman is in a relationship, they rely on their partner for financial stability; therefore once the abuse begins it is difficult for her to leave because she may not be financially stabled and can be left with no place to go, or no job to depend on. They are used to having their partner look out for them and their children and do not have the means necessary to support themselves and their family. The man often makes them believe she and the kids need him to survive which makes it impossible for her to think beyond that. One of the comments that I read about in the blog about abuse against women is about a woman who admitted that if she left her abusive husband her kids and her had no money to run away. She was afraid she was not going to have money to feed her children or afford to be a single mother. Women who depend on their partner for financial stability tend to stay in a relationship longer and are willing to put up with any type of abuse as long as their children have a roof over their heads and food to eat. In order to help women feel secure about putting an end to an abusive relationship it is essential for them to feel supported throughout this process. Support groups help women realize they are not alone in this and that it is not their fault. “It always easier to solve a problem that can be identified, analyzed, or isolated when we can say. ‘This is what causes the problem; this is where it happens, and why.’ Unfortunately, domestic violence does not easily lend itself to scientific analysis. Intelligent people let this happen too." (Berry 29). Even with all the research that has been done to search for ways in which society can help prevent domestic violence it is important to keep in mind that there is not one single cause of domestic violence and not one solution for it. Just like every situation is different, every person is different as well and sometimes you cannot generalize one solution for everyone who is a victim of domestic violence. The best thing that can be done is to reach out to shelters, counseling services, and organizations that can help each victim with their own case. Crisis services, counselors, and support groups are perceived as helpful by abused women. Every female patient should be briefly screened for domestic abuse by being asked simple questions that will encourage them to speak up about any abuse they are experiencing at home Increasing screening for domestic violence “helps patients move from a place of denial and self-blame to a point where she may be ready to make a change in her life” ( Aneja, Gottlieb, and Feller 308). Questions that can be asked are such as, “do you feel safe in your relationship and at home? Do you feel threatened in your relationship?” Asking women about domestic violence in health-care settings helps them feel safe and encourages them to seek help. As research has shown, screening for domestic abuse in health-care settings has been found to increase the identification of victims y medical physicians from 5-6% to 20%. Domestic abuse is a major public health problem that can have devastating consequences for women and their families. Every physician has a responsibly to screen female patients for this abuse and take appropriate steps if a patient screen positively. Com/Novels/ a barking dog seldom bites essay. Make sure that you are clear to the reader in terms of what you mean before you get too far into your writing. There is probably a continuum between mini- and full reviews. The same point applies to the dichotomy of descriptive vs. integrative reviews. While descriptive reviews focus on the methodology, findings, and interpretation of each reviewed study, integrative reviews attempt to find common ideas and concepts from the reviewed material [12]. A similar distinction exists between narrative and systematic reviews: while narrative reviews are qualitative, systematic reviews attempt to test a hypothesis based on the published evidence, which is gathered using a predefined protocol to reduce bias [13]. [14]. When systematic reviews analyse quantitative results in a quantitative way, they become meta-analyses. The choice between different review types will have to be made on a case-by-case basis, depending not just on the nature of the material found and the preferences of the target journal(s), but also on the time available to write the review and the number of coauthors [15] . 27. That is why researchers who have spent their career working on a certain research issue are in a perfect position to review that literature. Some graduate schools are now offering courses in reviewing the literature, given that most research students start their project by producing an overview of what has already been done on their research issue [6]. However, it is likely that most scientists have not thought in detail about how to approach and carry out a literature review. trying to find a new angle that has not been covered adequately in the previous reviews, and keep track of the search items you use (so that your search can be replicated [10] ), In general, a review of the literature should neither be a public relations brochure nor an exercise in competitive self-denial. If a reviewer is up to the job of producing a well-organized and methodical review, which flows well and provides a service to the readership, then it should be possible to be objective in reviewing one's own relevant findings. In reviews written by multiple authors, this may be achieved by assigning the review of the results of a coauthor to different coauthors. 16. Eco U (1977) Come si fa una tesi di laurea. A good review does not just summarize the literature, but discusses it critically, identifies methodological problems, and points out research gaps [19]. After having read a review of the literature, a reader should have a rough idea of: 9. Methods Ecol Evol 2. 238–247 doi:10.1111/j.2041-210X.2010.00083.x After having taken notes while reading the literature, you will have a rough idea of the amount of material available for the review. This is probably a good time to decide whether to go for a mini- or a full review. Some journals are now favouring the publication of rather short reviews focusing on the last few years, with a limit on the number of words and citations. A mini-review is not necessarily a minor review: it may well attract more attention from busy readers, although it will inevitably simplify some issues and leave out some relevant material due to space limitations. A full review will have the advantage of more freedom to cover in detail the complexities of a particular scientific development, but may then be left in the pile of the very important papers “to be read” by readers with little time to spare for major monographs. Whether your plan is to write a mini- or a full review, it is good advice to keep it focused 16 ,17. Including material just for the sake of it can easily lead to reviews that are trying to do too many things at once. The need to keep a review focused can be problematic for interdisciplinary reviews, where the aim is to bridge the gap between fields [18]. If you are writing a review on, for example, how epidemiological approaches are used in modelling the spread of ideas, you may be inclined to include material from both parent fields, epidemiology and the study of cultural diffusion. This may be necessary to some extent, but in this case a focused review would only deal in detail with those studies at the interface between epidemiology and the spread of ideas. the main areas of debate, and I've deliberately picked two papers with very different initial reviews. Both were eventually accepted, and neither was accepted upon first submission. One received a best paper award. Both have over 100 citations. I've picked these not because they're representative -- I've written papers with low citation counts also -- but because they illustrate the wide disparity in review constructiveness and tone that even decent, publication-worthy papers can receive. It started with a cryptic note from someone I'd met online, with a link to a bitcointalk.org message board discussion for a new currency called "bitmonero". His note said only: But let's start at the beginning, when I started getting in to a loose collaboration with three people I've never met---one whose name I'm not even confident I really know---with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of a nebulous new cryptocurrency at stake. Best-Path vs. Multi-Path Overlay Routing (Infocom2003, then IMC 2003) When receiving a review, read it. If your work is accepted, consider the reviews a way to make your paper that much better in the final version so people read, use and cite it! (getting it published is only the first step, making it have impact is another job). If rejected, read the reviews. If there is no rebuttal, wait a few days, then read the reviews again (with your co-authors) and discuss what you can take from the reviews to improve the paper. Break the review down into aspects of style, substance, new work, errors etc. Then decide how to use the review to your benefit. One poor review out of three can be frustrating but three out of three suggests you might be doing something fundamentally wrong in the presentation or experiments etc. Of course this isn't always the case, and there are famous examples of ground breaking papers being rejected as evidence that peer-review doesn't work. We must acknowledge peer-review is a human activity and as such is inherently fallible. As I understand it, this is different than in other areas of the humanities and science where conference acceptance rates can be very high and "reviewing" conference papers before acceptance is an alien concept. As a result, many fields don't see papers in peer-reviewed conferences as high-quality scholarly articles. Whereas, in computer science, papers in peer-reviewed conferences are accepted as high-quality scholarly articles. The journal will publish research surveys and expository overviews in computer science. Articles from other fields are welcome, as long as their content is relevant to computer science.
